ART STIMULATING MULTI-SPECIES COMMUNITY
We are currently looking for artists to collaborate with us on a pioneer project at the intersection of art and urban development, in which we explore the perspectives of multi-species communities, the sensing of place, and urban ecologies through an inhabitation of a site in Herlev, Copenhagen.
NXT and Stedets Væsen [Being of Place] invite artists to join our residency and participate in a site specific pilot project in suburban Copenhagen (Denmark), running from April 2023 through March 2024. We offer each artist or artist group the opportunity to work from our temporary laboratory ‘the Droplet’ in the old industrial area of Herlev, to engage with multi-species communities, and to explore methods of place sensing over a 2 week project period within the assigned time frame.
FRAMING OF RESIDENCY
Artists are invited – through their practice – to engage in arts-based research and knowledge-sharing in the role of “The Garden Caretaker”, who is both an inhabitant and stimulator of ‘place’. We would like to hear from artists who are:
– Curious to engage in participatory activities with local citizens and/or non-humans (e.g. plants, animals, microbes, fungi, etc.).
– Willing to develop, explore and share artistic method(s) of the ‘listening to place’.
– Open to inviting local citizens to experience and engage with the place, and the local multi-species community, e.g. through a performance, workshop, artist talk, landscape walk, audio piece or other artistic activity.
– Willing to engage in dialogues and interviews with us to explore the effects of the artistic explorations on site, and to contribute to the overall documentation of the project.
The residency includes an artist fee (20.000 DKK), the possibility of having materials reimbursed (up to 5.000 DKK), and a unique workspace on site. Further arrangements to be made after the selection process.

NXT & Stedets Væsen
This project is the idea and concept developed by Danish / Irish artist Madeleine Kate McGowan (NXT) through a collective process with artist Inga Gerner Nielsen, anthropologist Oliver Maxwell and architect Dominic Balmforth. The inhabitation of the site is launched in collaboration with project-leader Siv Werner and in partnership with DI, BLOX, DDC and as part of DESIRE, New European Bauhaus.
